What is Vision Therapy?

Vision Therapy is a doctor supervised program designed to improve the processing part of the visual system.  Vision therapy is not simply eye exercises. It is a scientifically-based program combined with careful history, visual examination and dedicated participation and can change a person's visual function and life.  The therapy is individualized to the unique needs of the patient.

Who can benefit from Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy can have dramatic results for many patients.

  • patients with lazy eye or eye turn
  • traumatic brain injury or concussion
  • learning difficulties or attention deficit disorders
  • depth perception problems
  • sports performance enhancement

How does Vision Therapy work?

An initial vision therapy assessment is performed by a behavioural optometrist to determine a strategy or plan for therapy.  Most Vision Therapy is conducted in-office, in a weekly session lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour. There are often homework items to supplement in-office work.   A therapy program can last from 20 weeks to a year or more depending on the individual’s diagnosis, their age and their commitment and participation level in the program.  After each 10 week sessions the patient has a re-evaluation to measure progress.

How to contact us?

Dr. Caroline Teske & Dr. Kari Stashuk believe in a holistic approach to eye health and vision. FOCUS VISION THERAPY is a natural extension of their primary vision care practice as another tool to ensure patients can have the full function of their eyes and optimal health and wellness.

For more information call 905-702-1616 and ask for information on Vision Therapy.

Children and students typically go to the optometrist’s office after a problem arises. The Eye See…Eye Learn (ESEL) program was developed to encourage parents to take a proactive approach to eye health and its connection to learning in children. ESEL provides a comprehensive eye exam to junior kindergarten students in participating school regions.

Studies show that 80 percent of learning comes directly through vision so providing children with every opportunity for success is the motivation behind ESEL. Dr. Caroline Teske and the team at Eyes Focused on You in Georgetown are pilot leaders for the program.

A complete eye exam offered through this program (and paid for by OHIP) provides much more insight than the cursory vision screenings students may experience in school. In addition, children up to the age of 20 can have their annual eye exam covered by OHIP to encourage a lifelong habit of monitoring and managing your eye health.
